Why did I pick up, leave my loved ones, friends and family, my comfort, my norm, my support, and make myself uncomfortable in newness, transition and the strange and unfamiliar? I did this so that my life could be enriched by a child whom, when I met him, couldn’t identify letters and/or letter sounds, was always in trouble and aggressive because of his illiteracy and feelings of rejection. I did this so that he would learn from the different and lovingly welcome strategy I bring with my Mother Theresa complex, and then give me this parting token of appreciation.
He and all the little and big students i have met and will meet over the duration of my service, are forever a part of the beautiful tapestry of my life, and I carry them with me in my DNA. He borrowed 2 books voluntarily. I was so happy that he took the initiative, I told him the books were a gift from me to him til we see each other again. He promised to keep reading, and I believe him. I know I am just a small drop of water in a big ocean, but when I read this, I felt like I was the whole ocean. They are so grateful for our help, our presence and yet it is all of us who are so grateful that they have intersected our lives.
Thank you my love. Thank you Jamaica.
