“Expand my territory”. As we serve in communities that are sorely in need of our unbiased, organic, judgment-free selves, let us show the children and communities we serve, all the symbols of resilience and power that they do not have to go on a plane or cross any sea or ocean to see/find.
Let us remind them of the narratives of their fellow countrymen and their forefathers. Let us help them to see that the best of life is a seed within each of them waiting to be germinated into the trees that bear the fruits that is their own life story; that no other person can realize for them, and that they owe to themselves, their families, their country and humanity.
Usain Bolt is their life-size and real example. He is proof that all of the above is a potential; all of the above is possible, no matter the humble beginnings or being plagued with different challenges and forms of lack.
He and others like him, Shelly-Ann from what most would call a garrison, or the equivalent of a favelos in Brazil; Elaine, also from rural Jamaica, where most of us are serving, and so many others. They are proof that the stories of our community members, and so many others, are possible because impossible is nothing in this small island country of champions.
