After months of hard work parsing through rat infested storage boxes to sourcing usable appropriate content books from Darien Books, The Golden Eye guest interaction program, sponsorship by the Issa Foundation and the Couples Hotel guest interaction program, to cleaning, painting, decorating and shelving, the Jacks Primary School library is fully operational and welcoming the eager minds who have worked assiduously with me to prepare their library for their use.
The library was abuzz with students today. They were clamoring to grab the book that they will read. now that the rigors of testing has been concluded making way for the Christmas Holidays. They cleaned up the library at the close of the day in preparation for yet another busy day tomorrow.
More than a storehouse for books, a library should be welcoming to the literate and illiterate alike. It should be a place where people feel comfortable honing, expanding and/or developing the valuable lifelong and necessary skill of reading. It should also be the place where information is disseminated for information’s sake. Not to separate, not to equalize, not to rank but to create equity in an otherwise inequitable world. Our students ranging in aptitude from pre-primer to primer to mastery, all avail themselves of the tools in their library, and they do so with ferocious hunger for the world that awaits them in the pages of the books in this library.
I present the Jacks River Primary School Library, serving the students at Jacks River Primary as well as the members, young and old, of the wider Jacks River, St. Mary community.
