“Beg yuh one cent, beg u one cent, yuh have e deh yuh have e deh, beg yuh one cent.”Jonkunnu chants.
In Jamaica, Christmas shuttles in more than the usual celebrations. From the Jonkunnus and Buru masquerades, both West African inspired, which involve masks donned by keepers of Jamaica’s African Roots masquerading in the streets; to the Christmas Eve Grand Market bazaar which lasts all night until Christmas morning, where vendors sell all types of wares, trinkets and treats; to the traditional door to door visits by neighbors, family and Community folk, where Sorrel drink made with a type of hibiscus blossom and rum as well as the intoxicating Jamaican Christmas Fruit (run and wine) cake is shared. To top it all off, homes are dressed with live Christmas flowers that come into bloom at Christmas, that being the poinsettias of Red, pink and white,. When it’s all over, you are very happy to say the least, as there is laughter, jokes, joy and good cheer everywhere. @peacecorps #howiseepc
