Every proper Belle ought to have a set of handkerchiefs, or so says my elderly Jamaican neighbor. As a child, I remember having these in my school bag which was a briefcase given to me by my grandma ‘mum,’ and as my grandmother modeled that this was an essential accessory in every real lady’s purse, I knew I needed to have them in my bag/purse.
Recently I was informed/reminded of how ‘distinguished’ I carry myself in the community of Jacks River, where I am assigned to work in the Peace Corps; and how unbecoming it is for a lady of my ‘calibre’ to be seen wiping my brows with paper towel or tissue.
In response to the criticism, I did what any well thinking lady would – I immediately went out and purchase these accoutrement that are necessary to complete my daily ensemble,
and I also bought a pair for my admirer. People are watching always, and I love it.
